The kids are away, so the parents will play….in Charleston South Carolina for pre Christmas this year.
So we booked a room at the 20th South Battery Inn, which was fully restored to its former glory around 2020. It is historically called the Stevens-Lather House.
Fabulous experience if you are coming to Charleston look no further.
The Carriage house is the best option for budget friendly travelers. We wanted to feel the city’s history and found our stay here the perfect fit.
The staff have been amazing and luckily even got to meet the owner. Incredibly hospitable team of people. They made us feel at home during our stay.
The Inn offers breakfast in bed, or you can eat in the main dining room. Great breakfast options you order the night before.
At Christmas, we were surprised at how few lights there were at night in the historic district. Lots of daytime Wreaths and decorations. I almost wondered if it is a neighborhood restriction. Here are a couple homes very close by.
Tonight, we checked out SNOB, which is Slightly North of Broad. Very fine cruisine, cozy, soft live music and excellent service.
Food
Charleston is famous for the food and does not disappoint.
I am a recent convert to shrimp and grits. Just can’t seem to get enough.
Of course, there is the obligatory stop in at Hyman’s Seafood . The amazing thing on this trip is that the owner actually stopped by and greeted us at our table, making sure the food was fine. That’s pretty impressive considering how long they have been in business and how successful they have been and continue to be. My favorite thing on the menu is actually the hush puppies.
Poogan’s Porch was excellent as well. Really enjoyed their shrimp and grits.
For lunch, there are two restaurants we feel good passing on to you.
Page’s Okra Grill and Tommy Condon’s Irish Pub . Both were amazing. At Page’s, take a break from the seafood and opt for the fried chicken. At Tommy’s loved the Shepherd’s Pie but was surprised by how good their Fried Shrimp turned out to be.
Just a few pics from the neighborhood. The Battery is a short walk through or along the park across from the Inn.
This is the heart of the historical residential end of town . A stroll through the streets is one of the greatest in America. So much rich history to be seen and discovered.
Finally, the beach is only 15 minutes away 🙂
Four or five days is about right.
